The latest addition to our earth sciences learning zone, Minerals Unearthed, is one step closer to completion with the arrival of a selection of resin encased elements.
Simply called Elemental, the newest display invites learners to safely get a close look at elements such as lead, mercury, and chlorine gas while comparing their properties to minerals which contain them. This is accomplished through riddles posed about the minerals which participants must solve to identify what elements they are made of.
The minerals in the riddles share common elements yet are quite different, re-enforcing how the different combinations can result in vastly different outcomes.
Elemental builds on other displays in the learning zone which examine the structure and formation of rocks and minerals. Together, the displays support our earth sciences programming for grades kindergarten through grade six.
This display was funded by a grant from the Canadian Geological Foundation.
