We're busy at Britannia Mine Museum but our Curator of Education and Collections, Diane, has something extra on her plate. Her book, In Love With Earth in Squamish & Whistler,
has just been published. The book is a beautiful collection of images of life and nature along the Sea to Sky corridor. We sat down with
Diane to chat about her new book and her role with the Museum:
Who: Diane Mitchell
Role: Curator of Education and Collections
Time at Museum: 8 years
How did you get involved with Britannia Mine Museum?
Well, the short version is, back in 2006, I was here from Scotland taking a course at the University of Victoria. I went to school for geology and was just doing a one week professional development type course. Before Britannia Mine Museum, I worked at the National Museum of Scotland for 12 years. I visited Britannia Mine and was chatting about how I wanted to move to Canada. About a month later, Kirstin Clausen, the Executive Director at the Museum, emailed me to tell me the curator job was available. I was just in the right place at the right time.
What made you decide to put a book together?
About 2 years ago, I started a blog. I like interpretive writing, putting information in terms everyone can understand, and I started a blog on geology and nature called In Love With Earth. About a year ago, I had the notion to write a little 32 page booklet on the Sea to Sky. From there, the idea grew into a full book.
About the book
The book looks at both the formation of the landscape of the Sea to Sky (think volcanoes and glaciers), as well as the ecosystem that thrives here, particularly our rainforest. There are so many fascinating stories to tell and sites to see, which the book interprets. It also acts as a guide to the best places to visit and identifies some of the plants and animals that live here.
In Love With Earth in Squamish & Whistler has been out for about a month now. I took all but about 5 of the photos in the book. Some of them I took over the last year and others I just had from living along the Sea to Sky. The book has taken precedence over the blog lately. I've only been able to do the book in my spare time because, with a 5 year old and a full time job, it's a bit much. Now that the book's out, I can get back to the In Love With Earth blog.
