Mining Your IPhone

Posted on Tuesday, August 20, 2013 by Diane Mitchell, Curator of Education & Collections

I read yesterday about the rumours that the new IPhone will be offered in gold - that is, with a gold coloured case. How many of us though realize just how much real gold is inside our phone?

There is more gold in a pound of electronics than in a pound of gold ore! I'm not sure which part of that statement says the most to me - just how much is in electronics, or just how little is in gold ore.

That statement came from a really interesting infographic we came across recently. It takes a look at the amount of gold and other metals - including platinum and rare earth metals - in our phone, along with how we are increasingly recycling our phones. It is well worth a read.

And thinking about the recycling end of our phones, this video from the BBC walks us through phone recycling at a plant in Britain. It is great to see how much of it gets reused at this site. I have never thought that recycling electronics wasn't worth it, but watching this really drives home the point.
