Celebrate the history of British Columbia at Britannia Mine Museum, a National Historic Site on the shores of Howe Sound. The mine has a fascinating history. Over 60,000 people lived and worked here; a site of tragedy and triumph, pioneering work on ore mining and copper extraction, fires, floods, and much more. This history is well preserved in thoughtfully curated exhibits that include machinery and equipment, photo archives, structures on the site, and the historic Mill No.3 building; one of most innovative and striking industrial buildings in all of Canada. Throughout Heritage Week, our Interpreter team will be offering brief histories of some of their favourite places and events on site: including intriguing stories from the past, the fascinating history of the church, and the 347 step staircase that once led the minors home to the Mount Sheer Town Site.
"Heritage is our legacy from the past, what we live with today and we pass to future generations. Our cultural and natural heritage are both irreplaceable sources of life and inspiration, our touchstone, our reference point, our identity."
