A Tale of Two Mines (Grades 5-12)

Programming Details: 30 Minutes

Britannia was once a major copper producer. Kennecott Utah Copper still is. Both mines started around the same time, and are similar in several ways, including being innovators. They also are very different. This program looks at some of the similarities and differences between these two mines through the lens of responsible resource management. Included in this program is Groundbreaking, our award-winning movie about Britannia.

Area of Focus:

  • Our role in mining

What your students will see and do:

  • Watch Groundbreaking, which can be previewed on YouTube, for an overview of the Britannia Mine
  • Be introduced to one of the largest open pits in the world, Kennecott Utah Copper Mine, through photos and discussion.
  • Engage in a discussion as to how these two mines differ, the reason for their differences, and their impacts.

Big Ideas:

  • Grade 4: The pursuit of valuable natural resources has played a key role in changing the land, people, and communities of Canada.
  • Grade 5/6: Natural resources continue to shape the economy and identity of different regions of Canada.
  • Grade 9: The physical environment influences the nature of political, social, and economic change.
