Imagine yourself living in a community being asked whether or not it supports a large mine being constructed nearby. What could be concerns if you were an environmentalist? What could be concerns if you were a politician? What could be concerns if you were a shareholder in the mining company? What could be your concerns if you were responsible for running the mining company? In Stakeholders, players take on the role of mining companies as they address real-world based challenges faced in the mining industry today and in doing so discover mining is about far more than simply digging a resource out of the ground. The game is offered in three versions, as described below.
Central to the board game is the stakeholder support card which provides players with a quantitative measure of support from shareholders, politicians, environmentalists, and local communities. The game play cards present players with a limited number of options for each challenge along with the support gains and losses attributable to each decision.
For Classroom or Large Group Play with Discussion
For at Home or Small Groups (up to 5 players)
The Card Game presents fewer, more detailed challenges to its players. With open ended questions, players are required to develop and defend their own solutions.
One function of Stakeholders is to expose players to the complexities involved in operating a mine in an easily digestable and engaging format. To achieve this, real issues mines are facing today were identified, researched, and synthesized into the game’s scenarios.
Have your students perform the same steps of researching issues facing mining companies today and distilling the issues into game cards. If developing cards for ‘The Board Game’, have your students use the Extended Game Deck (pdf) as a guide for assigning stakeholder support gains and losses.
Play the game with your student’s cards or use them solely as a basis for discussion on the issues.
Submit the scenarios to us for inclusion in future expansion packs for the game. Send your scenarios to firstname.lastname@example.org.
