Whatever Happened to Mt. Sheer

Daily Drop-in at 1:30 pm

Hidden deep in the mountains above Britannia Beach, the historic Mt. Sheer townsite was once a thriving mining community. Life on the mountain could be challenging and isolated, yet this was where miners and their families built their homes in cottages, bunkhouses, and a hotel, separate from the Britannia Beach townsite at the base of the mountain.

At its peak in 1940, Mt. Sheer was home to 1,200 residents, including 200 families, and featured a cookhouse, recreation centre, theatre, high school, hospital, and even an outdoor swimming pool. Discover what became of this remarkable mountain community and what remains at Mt. Sheer today.

Before Rail & Road

Daily Drop-in at 3:30 pm

Takes visitors on a journey back in time and offers insight into what it was like to commute to work when transportation to Britannia Beach was limited. Discover how steamships once brought life, labour, and leisure to Howe Sound, turning the Britannia Beach pier into the town’s beating heart.

Featuring rare video footage, vivid narration, and powerful stories of community and resilience, this program brings Britannia’s past to life not just as a mine, but as a lifeline shaped by the tides.

Live in the Lab: Secret Identities
