Britannia Mine Museum Establishes Modern Mining Education Centre with $3 Million Donation from Wheaton Precious Metals

Britannia Beach, BC (June 29, 2026)

The Britannia Mine Museum is pleased to announce a $3 million donation over three years from Wheaton Precious Metals Corp. (“Wheaton”) to establish the Wheaton Precious Metals Modern Mining Education Centre (the “Education Centre”).

The Education Centre will introduce students from elementary through post-secondary, as well as the general public, to the modern mining industry through new hands-on learning and training opportunities. The purpose-built space will support immersive, practical experiences, while upgrades to the Machine Shop and surrounding infrastructure will preserve the historical site and enhance safety. The Education Centre will also enable the Museum to double its dedicated educational spaces to meet growing demand. The Caterpillar 793C Haul Truck, donated by Finning Canada, with cab access to visitors has also been installed on site as a result of the Wheaton funding.

“We are grateful to Wheaton Precious Metals for this transformative investment, which will expand our capacity to deliver meaningful, hands-on experiences for students and visitors alike,” says Leonie Tomlinson, Board Chair of the Britannia Mine Museum. Ms. Tomlinson further states, “This unique learning centre will bring the story of modern mining to life, helping bridge the gap between public understanding and the mining industry’s role in innovation, environmental stewardship and everyday life.”

“Investing in education is essential to building the next generation of talent in mining,” says Haytham Hodaly, President and Chief Executive Officer of Wheaton Precious Metals. “By supporting programs that connect students with the mining industry, we can help raise awareness of available career paths while equipping them with the skills and knowledge to pursue and succeed in those opportunities.”

Wheaton’s contribution will also support a new collaboration between Britannia Mine Museum and the  UBC Norman B. Keevil Institute of Mining Engineering, providing mining students with on-site classroom space to support field-based learning.

This collaboration will strengthen the museum’s established STEAM curriculum programs to deliver unique, engaging, and educationally aligned experiences for school groups. Programs will explore the relevance and impact of resource development and geological exploration. The museum currently hosts approximately 11,000 students annually on curriculum-based field trips, with school group bookings selling out months before the end of the school year.

“The generous support of our donors allows us to scale to meet growing demand, while adapting to a rapidly changing world where mining and critical minerals play a pivotal role,” noted Ms. Tomlinson. “It also enables us to continue preserving and sharing British Columbia’s mining heritage.”
