Britannia Beach, BC (May 21, 2025) – This June, the Britannia Mine Museum is once again hosting two sensational events – British Columbia’s mine safety heroes are coming to the rescue for the BC Provincial Mine Rescue and First Aid Competition on June 6 and 7, while some of BC’s favourite drag king and queen superstars are back for two stage performances for “Old Town, New Queens” on June 14.
On Friday, June 6 and Saturday, June 7 (from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.), elite groups of highly specialized and skilled mine rescue teams from mining companies throughout British Columbia will take part in the BC Provincial Mine Rescue and First Aid Competition. This is the second year in a row the competition is taking place at Britannia Mine Museum where mine rescue teams compete in a variety of simulated underground and surface rescue challenges including first aid, firefighting, rope rescue and hazardous environment management.
Organized by the BC Ministry of Mining and Critical Minerals and the Mining Association of BC (MABC), the 67th annual competition maintains and showcases the BC mining industry’s leading and highly specialized health, safety and rescue practices, bringing together mine rescue teams from all over the province to test their emergency response abilities. Mine rescue teams are frontline heroes with highly specialized skills and training and serve as the mine’s fire department, paramedics and high angle rescue teams, as well as community first responders.
Note: Visitors to the Museum during this June 6 & 6 two-day event will have access to the lower site exhibits including the visitor centre and gift shop, as well as the gold panning area, but there will be no BOOM! show or underground tours available on these days due to the competition.
On Saturday, June 14 from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m., the museum is once again hosting “Old Town, New Queens” where a colourful lineup of spectacular drag queen and king performers from BC’s 2SLGBTQIA+ community light up the historic Mill No. 3 building with two powerhouse stage performances.
To commemorate the Britannia Mine Museum’s 50th Anniversary, this year’s show theme “Drag Through the Decades!” will see the all-star cast perform fierce lip sync numbers inspired by the museum’s past – from the disco era to today’s viral hits. The atmosphere will be vibrant and inclusive, offering a welcoming space for everyone to celebrate self-expression, creativity, and community.
The museum is proud to welcome the Association for Mineral Exploration as this year’s Copper Queen sponsor, and thank them for their continued support of the Museum.
The museum is also currently featuring its 50th Anniversary exhibit, A Museum’s Journey, which runs from now till Sunday, September 21st, 2025. The exhibit takes visitors on a journey through time looking back throughout the decades on how the museum has changed and developed in its 50 years history since it first opened as a museum in 1975.
The 50th anniversary exhibit features interactive displays and never-before-seen archival photos and news clippings from deep within the museum’s collections, which has grown to include several historical buildings, more than 7,000 artifacts, over 11,000 photos, and 3,000 archival documents. From shared stories of people from all over the world who either worked here, lived here or had families who did, each decade is highlighted and explored from the grooving 70s, retro 80s and Y2K right up to modern-day 2025.
Located 45 minutes north of Vancouver on the picturesque Sea-to-Sky highway, the Britannia Mine Museum provides unique and memorable experiences that engage visitors of all ages.
